I started my first job at the age of nine as a scarecrow.
Children were used in farmers' fields to scare away birds from eating sown seed and crops. They might just run at the birds making a noise, perhaps with a rattle and waving their hands. Hours were usually long, in all weathers and only earning a few pennies a day. At age nine Albert in theory should have still been at school.
